916H Allis repower

Hi everyone I have an early 80's 916H with a broken connecting rod, so I am looking to repower as opposed to rebuild as I have a line on a 16 hp Vanguard engine new in box never used. Just looking for some advice as to what I am getting into as far as adapting this engine to fit and maybe some tips from those have gone down this path before, as I have not! Thanks

For an 18 hp. Vanguard in my 7117, I used a kit from Small Engine Warehouse. It included a base mounting adapter, a flywheel to drive shaft adapter, and muffler. It used the tractors rubber coupling and drive shaft. I did have to do some modifications. The base adapter is available from Al Eden at a very reasonable price. He may know about the flywheel adapter. Rather than use a relay, I changed the ignition switch to one for the Briggs ignition. I am very happy with the Vanguard in the tractor. It has more torque than the KT17 and is quieter and uses less fuel. It is also much smoother than a one cylinder. Tom

Another question about this repower. The vanguard engine I have found is a model 305447, type 0075 GI, it's 16hp, I can't find a cross reference anywhere that tells me it will fit and replace a K341 in a 916 allis. I would like to know for sure before I buy this engine. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Is the motor your looking at new? It will fit you will need to buy a stub shaft, starter and a screen. More than likely a flywheel and stator as well. Because that particular type number appears to be a rope start. If you can spend the extra money I would go to a 18hp or 20hp. The one in the link below is an electric start and is about $200.00 more than the model number and type number you posted. If you had to buy those parts individually it would cost more. Not sure if you are planning to buy new or not but you can get the Kohler Command for $1350.00 - $1550.00 dollars. Below is the engine model and type number you listed. http://tewarehouse.com/305447-0075 The one I linked below appears to have a rotating flywheel screen and you would be happier with that as well. The gaps they have around the flywheel adaptor in that link will suck grass right into the flywheel fan and fill it with chaff and over heat the engine in short order (unless the base of there adaptor is flush with the screen, which I doubt). You wouldn`t have that problem if the screen rotates or a stub shaft as an flywheel adaptor. Trimming the screen to fit tight would make a big difference on grass getting in. http://www.ebay.com/itm/18hp-Briggs-Vanguard-Engine-replace-Kohler-Simplicity-/200680498500?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eb97d6544

The one below the screen rotates but atleast the flywheel adaptor is round and alot less chaff will get through. http://www.ebay.com/itm/18hp-Briggs-Stratton-Engine-Simplicity-7114-7116-/130607075357?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e68c9d01d Botom line is you will be alot happier with a screen that rotates with the flywheel. I put a Honda GX620 in my 917H. I didn`t have any frame mods to do but had to make a engine spacer, drive shaft adaptor and shorten my driveshaft. I could have gotten by with a standard driveshaft. I just wanted it to sit further back. For the engine spacer I used a B 10 motor plate and welded 3/8" X 2" flat strap to it. To raise it 7/8" of an inch. I believe the Vanguard has to be raised by 7/8" as well. You can still buy the Kohler Triad engine plate for around $35.00 to raise the engine the amount needed. You will need to remove around 2" at the top of your 916H frame to get a twin in it. There is alot of info. archived on this. Your frame is a little taller on the sides than a 7117 or 7119 frame. There are alot of Briggs single cylinders out there as well to repower with that would only require an ignition switch and minor wiring changes. Here is a resent discussion on the commands below. http://www.simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=119159&SearchTerms=command

Thanks Ray, yes the engine is new and is about 5 miles from me and the price is right- so that is why I am going with that one. I am in south western Ontario does anyone have a place to buy the drive shaft adapter, muffler, adapter plate etc. as mentioned in previous posts locally or am I just better off to order the from the US from either Jim's Tractors or Small Engine Warehouse. Thanks for all the help so far.

So it has a recoil start? If so the parts needed are in the manual below. I would look up the price of parts. You would need a flywheel, stator, regulator, starter and probably other stuff. You probably could gt most of it on ebay reasonable since there are a lot of Vanguard parts there. Any Briggs dealer in Canada should beable to order you parts. http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/18nnxDXDnfBhU7y.pdf

As far as I know it is an electric start- so the guys says who owns it I saw pictures of that model mentioned on the internet and I noticed the recoil start as well - so I asked him specifically about that.
