725 Stuck in Gear

A friend of mine gave me a Simplicity 725 last week for free. It appears to be complete but it does not run. I rolled it on my trailer, put it in gear so it would not roll off, and now I cannot get it into neutral. The engine was COATED in oil, no spark, rear axle is leaking oil, and it is stuck in neutral. I removed the engine from the tractor and pulled the rear axle to get to the seal. But unless I can get it into neutral I see no point in fixing the other two problems. Any suggestions? I am far from a mechanic, but I do enjoy tinkering with these old mowers. I had never even heard of a simplicity 725 until last week.

Your going to love it. The reason its not shifting could be many reasons. For me on my 725 the pinion gear in the tranny was broken. I tryed to fix it by welding it back together but it didnt hold. Finally just replaced the whole rearend with another. As for the engine remember that they are old probebly 50 years so they will need some tlc. Mine needed points adjustment, carb rebuild, and external coil. Since ive done all that though I have never looked back. Spend the 10 dollars for membership so we can see some pictures. We love pictures, and video. If you want you could put together a whole topic of getting this tractor running complete with pictures and video. by the way, welcome to the club, patrick

Welcome to the site. Use the search function at the top of the page. Type in bent screwdriver trick or search ZippoVarga transmission. It should come up with the way to realign the shift forks back in neutral. Good luck. B10Dave.

Thank you for the responses. I wish I took some pictures before I started to tear it down. I will read up on the screwdriver trick and give it a try. IF I find this tractor is more work than I want to tackle, would anyone be interested in the parts? I have an old John Deere tractor and I understand how important it is to keep these old parts out of the dump. My goal however is to get it running, looks like a great winter project.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
