Neat old Single Wheel...(new home)

Kinda lookin at a 'what's it worth' on this one. PO thinks it's a '40's model. I'm hoping to go take a peek somtime after the weather breaks here and see if I can get more info. I was peeking around on Karl's site and will do some more digging. Curious what the take is on it, and what one in this shape might be reasonably priced at. The Briggs is obviously not original, and the tire is shot, but beyond that, it looks real solid. I sure don't need it, but for me they have cool factor I can't quite put my finger on. :p

I'm hoping to grab a cultivator and some wheel weights when I get over there. Waiting onthe counties to do their thing on the roads before making the 1.5hr hike. He has 9 Simplicity walk behinds, and this is the only single wheel. If it's cheap enough, it would be a great addition to a show fleet, and I would love to search out the correct Briggs. He didn't really have an asking price, but I'd want to be fair. I'll probably have to just throw a number at him after I see it. He has a pile of attachments, but I'm not sure if any work with the single wheel.

There is an engine on Ebay right now that claims to be from a Simplicity one wheel tractor made in the 40"s. http://www.ebay.com/itm/lauson-RLC-406-4-bolt-gas-engine-simplicity-one-wheel-garden-tractor-motor-/120837243690?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c2276032a Dan

If you need the Briggs Model U as shown in that ad that may be a tough one. It is one of the harder to find cast iron Briggs engines and you should expect to pay 120+ for a complete and free one if the seller knows what he has. The good news is all of the small CI Briggs motors such as Models WMB, 5s, 6s, N would bolt right up. They can be found easily. The only problem might be the throttle cable hook up. Gary

Well, here she is...whole lot different than a riding machine... The driveline is pretty 'simple'. The gearbox is attached to the frame at the rear wheel and pretty sure the gear drives against the cast wheel, like on my gang reels. Tires are 4-12 and might be a challenge to find. I love the round knobs, but probably cannot find a similar replacement. (any help would be greatly appreciated) It only has drive and neutral, via engagement with the LH lever. The RH lever lowers the cultivator, or engages the reel or sicklebar mower belt drives. Here's the quick hitch, showing the cultivator partially unattached. T-handle bolts tightened to keep the attachments in place, and it looks like they would have been pretty easily attached or removed. And the kickstand! ;) Here it is in the travel position In all, I'm researching like crazy and learning a lot. The tractor is a Wards (Serial #W-3334), which leads me to two assumptions...first, it's pre-1940 (when they moved to the Simplicity name and Briggs Model U engine), and second, that it NEEDS an original Lauson 3/4hp model RLC engine. I've been chatting with two Lauson guru's that I tracked down, but have found little additional info on the tractor itself. My PO has a few sicklebars and front reel mowers that MIGHT work in this application. We have yet to see. I'm pretty excited about the old girl, and if I find a running Lauson RLC and a 4-12 tire, I will be in pretty good shape to have a nice restoration complete for show season.

dOddOd Pretty neat piece Josh. Looks like you will have fun with it. Now you need to build a sulky so you can drive it at shows. Dave.

I don't see 4-12's new anywhere, but 5-12's are still available if it will fit under the fender. tractor tread only though, no knobby. If you want to look, try trencher tires in 5-12 Used might be more realistic in 4-12. Won't look as nice as new on a restoration, but better than nothing ? Somewhere in my travels I seem to remember 4 of them stacked up somewhere..........;):O

The tire is a Wards Riverside.I forgot what briggs engine is on my machine and sure wish I had the cultivators for it. Mine does not have the fender on it or the kick stand but sure sounds like a good idea.I have not tryed to put a sicle mower on or reel mower on yet. I have left my tractor orinigal color. Someone had the manual on here a while ago.Good luck with the project. Bob

Thank you sirs...I'm pretty excited about it. ^ I would love to get it into like-original paint. I almost think a used 4-12 would give me my best 'original' look, IF I can nail one down. I think a 5-12 would fit, but I'd like to give my search for a 4-12 a good try first. Here's the serial number tag...

Here's what the tag on an appropriate Lauson RCL would look like, for this Wards tractor...

It might have been Harley-Davidson front fenders as those were probably cheaper to buy then make. Just a thought.^

Have you thought about putting a new tube in the tire, finding the appropriate engine, and leaving it in un-restored but operating condition??? That would be cool too.

I'm going to give the tire a try, since I have been researching everywhere with no results for any 4-12 other than a rib front tractor tire. I may have my engine, that Lauson, though I'm told it's a bit overpriced for what it is. It is the correct engine for the Wards machine, which I beleive mine to be based on the serial number and tire. Since it's been redone and runs well, I can't see myself finding an alternative, buying the parts and getting it running by summer. I would like to redo the finish and replace the hardware. Since the tractor was already repainted at some point, I don't see it as original anymore. Quite a bit of the hardware is loose, and worn from rattling around so I would like to freshen that as well. I would also like to fabricate some reproduction tools for the cultivator, based on a couple pictures Karl sent me to complete that look. We'll see where this goes...it really shouldn't take much as long as I can get a tire solution 8)

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
