Wiring

Stupid question: did you verify the tractor is not in gear ? (ie: is safety switch a factor ?) Also, do you at least 'hear' the solinoid ? You should hear a 'click' when you turn the key to 'start'.

Post the Model number off the ID tag on the engine here and I'll scan in a copy of the electrical system your engine is supposed to have, provided my B&S manual covers it.[A href='http://www.wheatfarm.com']http://www.wheatfarm.com[/a]

Figured out the problem. The safety switch must be bad. I jumped the two wires for the saftety switch with a piece of wire and it turned over just fine. Thanks for the input.

Just got a replacement motor for my 728. It is an 8HP Briggs with the automotive style starter not the starter/generator. I installed the motor but when I turn the key nothing happens. My question is there something wired incorrectly? When it I had the old motor everything worked fine. The only change I made from the original wiring is to connect the wire from the solenoid that went to the generator to the starter of the new motor and connected the wire from the ammeter to the red wire on the engine which I believe is the alternator. I also have a brand new battery. Sorry for the long post. The link I have included shows a drawing of how my tractor is wired. Thanks.
