Fine day for some winter logging

Weather was perfect today (upper 20s and sunny), so I decided to grab the saw and head out into the woods. Did a little recon first Then hooked up the log arch and got to work. I do seem to have a thing for orange :D I'd been on the verge of many stucks and finally had one catch up with me! Buried myself right on down... A quick run back to the house was all it took though; sometimes ya just need a little team work 8D A lot of heat will come from a few hours work; I can't complain! All nestled back in their spots for next time.

Not the greatest video in the world, but keeping forward momentum was proving more important than cinematography. Pretty much jammed the hydro forward and hung on for the ride! All the buried branches and soft spots had me bouncing around pretty good on every trip back to the landing. :p:p http://youtu.be/09IO83P1ArI

Well hell, if you want to come play, we can have one man running the log arch tractor and the other running the woods trailer; 2X the tractor fun! And all the IPA you want :D

I built it a few summers ago. Used to be longer, but I caught it full speed (and loaded) on a tree and twisted the top tube a bit. Cut the bent part out and decided to try it out shortened up. Though I can't fully suspend logs now, the process of loading goes a lot quicker (not trying to find the exact center weight of the log) and it's much more maneuverable in the woods. For the most part, only the end of the log gets dirt jammed in the bark, so it's a heck of a lot easier on chainsaw chains than dragging logs behind the truck. I don't always use it, but if the logs are in a spot where the dump truck can't fit, it sure is handy.

No kidding!! B)B)sm02 Was supposed to fix that last year but the finances never allowed. Hopefully this summer will be different. Besides the longevity of the tractors, I hate seeing junk laying around the yard! :Y

Wow, what is the diameter of the large log? what is the tire size of the log skidder? and what do you use to lift the log. Real cool. jh

Not sure on the diameter of that log, prolly 17-18ish. If I remember right, I built the log arch to fit at least a 36" dia log so it's span will be a bit wider than that for reference. Order info from eTrailer: 2 Spindle 1" Thread 1.25" Rd X 4" Stub 2 Hub 2000 Lb 4 Bolt W/l44643 Bearings 2 Kenda 215/60-8 Tire W/8" White Wheel - 4on4 - Lr C Lifting is currently done with a cheapy Harbor Freight 3000lb winch, though I'd say that claim is slightly exaggerated... I'll usually wrap the cable around and back to the shackle to achieve double line pulling power; once or twice I've even used a second shackle like a snatch block to get an even greater pull. I have a nicer Warn ATV winch just needing rebuilt solenoid, but this one keeps on kicking so I figure I'll run it 'til it dies! :D

Thanks! and yep; wood furnace in the basement piped into the forced air. We haven't turned the propane furnace on in the four years we've lived out here and I intend to keep it that way! 8D

I'm so deprived of seat time, I'm up for about anything these days. I've been sipping that brew you suggested, after a tip on where to find it from RayS. As much as I'd love to jump right into the IPA when I get there, it's probably best I hold off until after the chainsaw is put away 0:) I had a run-in with my B-110 clutch Satruday morning...I'm now erring in the side of caution with tractor stuff. It was a startling wake up call. I will need a new glove, and have to wait for the swelling to go down in my fingers before I can type with two hands again. Using the old red hot needle trick to drain puss every morning right now.OO

OO Ouch. I drink beer while doing many things, but running the chainsaw is certainly one task I choose to operate without. I won't stand here and say I've never done it, but talk about no room for error! Now, if the rounds are all bucked and it's just the manual labor of loading... :D

That is a remarkable log hauler...You could use a saw mill with the size log you pulled out of there. Lots of woodworkers were wishin' Very cool machines dOd

It is very nice currently, but there are some downfalls. Right now it's great in that we can store all the winter's wood in the basement before the heating season starts so we never have to bring wood in from outside. It creates a mess, but it's still unfinished down there so it's of little concern. However, in another few years we'll be wanting to finish the basement; therein lies the problem! Not saying it can't be done, but trekking wood through living space isn't near as easy as going outside to load an OWB.
