I had that question recently and could not for the life of me figure out why it should rub but I played with the adjustment and in order to get it adjusted right it just seems it has to rub. I tried adjusting it so it rode higher in the pulleys but then it seemed really slow so I just followed the owners manual per the factory adjustment. The belt is again rubbing the axle tube. If you can deal with it being slower than molasses then you can get it to ride higher. Just my 2 cents worth but then again I've only had one variable and I'm sure all the clutch linkage and everything is worn which only contributes to this. This is why my Sunstrand and Vickers do all the work around here :).
