Form a gasket VS a factory gasket.......

What is everybody's opinion on the "form a gasket in a tube" vs using the factory made paper gaskets??? I like the form a gasket in a tube version better-- no gasket to have to get/ no lining up. I am working on assembling tranmission halves back together. The brand I am using is Permatex.

Most, and I'll repeat most applications you can use just the form a gasket and be just fine. The only issue is if the old style gasket is needed for a shim spacing. Places like on a pan it's easy to substitute. But for crankcase panels that are made for crankshaft end play you must start with the needed gaskets and go from there. You can use bothbut I'd use a tiny thin layer finger smeared onto the OEM gaskets. This combines the effects of both sealing compounds. I normally use a combination on most all of my automotive surfaces for gaskets but NEVER on anything with an O-ring.

I use permatex with the gaskets, a light coat on one side only to hold it in place while assembling. With this way you can dis-assemble without wrecking the gasket,,,,usually. Steve

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
