Mower Deck Bearings

Well, yesterday I got spring fever as for the last week or so in my area, the weather has been beautiful with temps. in the upper 60's and 70's. If the weather keeps up, I may have to at least mow my front lawn in a week or so. It is getting green fast. I took my snowthrower off of my Deutz 912H yesterday and put the mower deck on. I noticed a loud growl in the mower bearings when I engaged it. These are the original bearings. Not bad for a 1986 tractor. I'd like to fix the issue without spending a fortune. My question is, could I just change the bearings themselves out without replacing everything else? I think I'm gonna replace the arbor housings though, while I'm at it, but I don't want to break the bank either. Any suggestions? I'd let my local Simplicity dealer do the work, but he charges $70 an hour for labor. If I can do it myself, that would be great! Thanks!:D

First of all you need to get one apart before you can figure out what has to be replaced. You might not even need arbor housings. Bearings can be purchased fairly economically. Also, there is no known repair book on the newer style. You can browse the forums and look to see what has been posted.

If you get the assembly apart, look on the bearings for thier id numbers u can likely get them at a local auto parts store.ie Car quest or NAPA usually less than at the dealer.

I have been using these for years. No issues and the quality is excellent. The price can`t be beat either. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370584835960

Simplicity still has that P/N. But fit, form and function, the bearing Ray mentions for all pratical purposes is the same, it just doesn't come in a Simplicity wrapper.

Sam they are dimensionally different then the 108202 type bearing. Where are they used?

The 118011 bearing is a bearing for the BGB on a FDT. The inside bore diameter is a little bigger on the 118011 bearing than the 108202 and will not work for the deck bearing. It would work on the BGB for a FDT, but the shield would need to be removed. I think a 6204 bearing will on the FDT bevel gear box as well. Would have to check the numbers on the bearings I have in the garage.

I took one apart this morning. The housings look pretty rough. A lot of scale falling off of them. I'm thinking of replacing them while I'm at it. My dealer said the bearings are relatively easy to remove when the shaft is cleaned up good. Right now I'm looking at about $190 in parts: Bearings (6), Housings ( 3 Upper and 3 Lower), 3 Shim washers, and 6 bearing shields. I'll just have to work a little more at my second job!:D

Ended up replacing bearings and shafts, upper and lower housings, center pulley, idler pulley, and shields. Just under $400 for parts!:O. The up side is, it should be like a new mower deck when done!

The new and old style assemblies use the same Simplicity 108202 bearing which is a Fafnir P204RR6. Bearing Specifications are below for The Fafnir and the Z9504RST. So I would say they are identical bearings. Fafnir spec. ID: 0.750 x OD: 1.7805 x W: 0.61 Z9504RST or 204KR3 spindle bearing .75 x 1.7805 x .61 Link below states what it replaces. http://www.bearingsdirect.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=3539 Some common interchanges but are not limited to: Allis-Chalmers 0536986 Ariens 05407300 Ariens 05412000 Ariens 54073 Ariens 54120 BCA 204BBAR BCA 8618 BCA 8618DD3 Case C28971 Cub Cadet 470880R91 Dixon 6011 Fafnir 204KR3 Fafnir 204KRNP2 Fafnir P204KRNP2 Federal FS1817 Fox 2C5A5 Honda 91102-UA4003 International Harvester 464347R91 International Harvester 465003R91 John Deere AH17132 John Deere AH17132H John Deere B15650B John Deere JD9239 John Deere JD9239M John Deere JD9266 John Deere JD9296 Joy 382464 Koyo DG1945A Lillisston 20-50-094 Massey Ferguson 833411M1 Massey Ferguson 833877M1 New Departure 9504B New Departure Z9504B New Idea 012753 Snapper 1-0696 Snapper 1-3313 White Farm 833411M1 Yazoo 204-060 Link below is $19.19 for 6 bearings. I have them in two decks. They have been in there for a few years. I believe BLT has them in his as well. I believe he is also the one that posted about them years ago and I started using them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370584835960

I just put a set of those bearings that Ray recommends in my mower deck last summer. They work great and are quiet. Perfect fit.
