917 Oil leak

Recommended Posts

My son has my 917 on a long borrowing agreement}:). Any way he's been making noises about an oil leak coming down the fill pipe in the axle gear case. Well this week I jumped into it thinking it was coming down the split line between the hydro and gear case. After some terse words mainly with the pump pulley, I got pump separated from the gear case and the Loctite gasket promptly fell in pieces in my hand and thinking that's it.;)I got all the old gasket stuff off and then priced Loctite 504, another cardiac infarction, $55.00 for a 25 milliliter tube. Well I got a tube of Hi temp RTV that will last me a lifetime for a lot less. Got it all back together, fill it up with lube, all checks out, take it for a test run look underneath and oh, oh, oil leak.

A close look see shows the leak coming out the the shaft bearing below the hydro in red. Then RayS and I talked about it to death and he said to pull of fill cap run engine to let sump drizzle out overflow and find its own level. Did that and oil really came. For some reason I wiggled pin on breather (blue) and overflow stopped. Bad breather, Ugh. Any way, I am still getting some oil to leak down from shaft on gear case. My question is will that eventually go away or am I looking at more work. And by the way, Ray and I and some others are communicating via Skype and you would really be surprised how much can be done by looking and talking to that person. Cuts into phone bill as it is FREE.:D:D

Good morning peeps! I’m always searching for helpful information with my AC collection. Hope to find out new information and pass on my own experience in restoration. Here are some pics of my babies. I’m still looking for front rims for the 410 so yesterday I put the 310 wheels on took it for a drive. Working pretty good but still needs some carb work. Gotta get the 310 running next. Have a great day!😁
