If your briggs is OEM the engine code is the best way I've heard of, there is also a date cast into the tranny housing on the right side on 3 out of the 4 I've seen just below a nd to the rear of the axle. MPH

Clean just above the bottom of the flywheel metal cover near the bottom on the left side (carburator)you should see three sets of numbers. Make, Model, Code. The second set, usually a 7 digit number begins with two digits representing the year. If there is a lot of rust, use ca solvent and steel wool to bring it out. There should also be several labels next to it such as "Made to the Specifications of Allis Chalmers", Oil Info, etc.
