JCPenney 1851/990 MTD

Got a call a few minutes ago from a man with an 1851 JCPenny garden tractor. The hydro stat (or hydraulic as the case may be) is down on it and he says he can get it to just move by running the engine WOT. He has a good bit of equipment for it and wants to try and repair but I couldn't give him any information on that hydro. I have no clue what it might be. If anyone knows anything about this please share. Thanks

You probably know that the 990's were pretty serious GT's, unlike current offerings from "emptyD". hard to get info, esp. manuals - try MTF - esp. search a guy name "blacksmithman" or like that. There are a lot of related threads there that might help. Various models, with various numerical names like 990, 960, and others Model numbers like 1851, 1855, etc. White yard boss GT1650 aka 990-103 also White "Farm Boss" = more confusion, but I think these are bigger slightly? saw one for sale once, years ago. Other Brands = White, Columbia, Dayton, etc. It's confusing, and previous research I did into these popped up a lot of dead ends. Currently near me, one for sale, looks like a resto. - has Hydro w hi/lo range, no name - perhaps you could inquire. http://belleville.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-home-outdoor-lawnmowers-leaf-blowers-White-Farm-Equipment-Yard-Boss-Garden-Tractor-GT-1855-W0QQAdIdZ375275542 I have seen others look like beautiful "rusty olde junk". 8D Prices vary a lot - up to 2500+ Hope this helps a bit. sm03

Agreed. The 990s "Ranch King" series(in many lettered paint schemes) were pretty decent. They aren't a B in any stretch but respectable in their own sense. Unfortunately the trans rebuild kits on most MTD relatives is somewhat costly if it is available, so there are pros and cons to be weighed.

Hey Terry, if your buddy cant get the tractor back up and running, I might be interested in some attachments if they were Category 0. Thanks and good luck with it. Also, on Mytractorforum, there is a moderator that goes by Ddogg and I know he is an avid fan of the MTD 990. He may be able to help you out as well.

David, When he was trying to tell me what he had over the phone I couldn't get a picture of it to form. But once I saw the manuals linked above I knew I have 3 that are rebuild-able on hand. That said, what are you looking for ? Maybe I can locate some of it for you.

Im always looking for pretty much anything that is a Factory made category zero 3pt hitch. I have a set of Brinly tandem disks that are 3pt and would love to expand my Brinly made 3pt collection. Ive got a line on Brinly 3pt scrape blade too. The bad thing is that its in Richmond VA. 8hrs round trip. Im not that desperate yet. I also have an off brand tractor with a 2000rpm rear pto. Finding any attachments that works off of it, is like finding hens teeth in a haystack. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks and good luck with that rebuild. Ive found 2 sellers with some attachments that I would love to have. One of them is almost in D.C. and the other is close but wont split the stuff up. http://fredericksburg.craigslist.org/grd/2956021003.html The stuff in the last picture is what i would love to have. All Brinly made equipment. http://charlotte.craigslist.org/grd/2989051397.html They wont split any of this up. Id love to have that 48in 2000rpm tiller. They are usually way too much for me anyways. Usually retailing at around $1000 give or take. I sure would love to have one. Thanks!
