KT17 Oil use

Well, after picking up the GTHL knowing it used oil, I knew I would be going through the engine. So today it finally came out and I am freshening up the whole enchilada. However, it appears as though this breather reeed valve just might have a little something to do with the oil consumption.

Question I have is: Does anyone know what might have caused this other than fatigue? All the valves and cylinders looked very good, but you can sure tell which cylinder was sucking the oil, the one with the breather. Lastly, is there a kit for a filter attachment for the KT? I have seen them with and without filters, and there is a removable plate where the filter assembly would go. Thanks in advance!

My guess is that reed pulses around 60 times a second at WOT and maybe after 20 years of operation it just gave up. My Sunstar had one that gave up after only 10 years. It's hard to say.

Yes there is an adaptor. Remove the plate and install the filter adaptor, you will have to trim the frame a little bit (about 3/8") for the filter to fit. I have trimmed the frame with a jig saw with the engine in place, takes about 5 mins. I don't have the part number, they so up once and while on e-bay.

In addition to this, and as an FYI, the small piece of red rubber "hose" that slips over the mounting bolt and is used as a seal also, was not installed on this part, completely missing. That would certainly allow for a lot more movement and harder "slapping" of the reed. This is a replacement breather assembly, so it would be interesting to know when it was done. Somebody didn't follow the destructions. Those darned engineers seem to know everything.........

Recieved the new gasket kit and rings. Sure enough, in the gasket kit is the little red rubber hose for the breather. Hope to have it all back together in the next few days. Work is getting in the way (I hate it when that happens), and Mother's day too. But cousin Tim's LTH has had the electric PTO die, so I will need to the GTHL back up and running so he can cut grass until I can get his back up and running.

Well, she's back together. No smoke at all, runs like top. After a few mowings and the new rings break in, she'll get an oil change and be ready for the long haul. I would stress to all with oil use and any smoking an the KT or Magnum series to check the breather assembly. I have now experienced two of these with a failed breather. In addition to oil use, it can cause undue crankcase pressure and blow out seals. Cheap and relatively easy fix (unless you decide to put a set of rings in while you're at it). 8D

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
