Newbie Plowing needs help

Good morning all. I have been lurking here since I got my first old iron tractor and now I have another that I want to use as a tractor for the garden. It is an Allis Chalmers 710. I have a moldboard plow(10" I think), disc and a cultivator. I have had the father in law help me with the plow setup using the guide on here for the brinly plow. However the only place to test is sod with lots of thatch so I could not test to well. I did notice that the belt was slipping in second gear so I went to the local farm store and consulted their book for a new one. Dayco L449 I think. Put the new belt on and wow the thing popped a wheelie and went faster then ever. So I loaded up and headed to the garden got the plow put on took off in second dropped the plow and smiled as I watched the dirt roll right over. All was going well until I noticed the belt start to make some noise, then howl, then smoke so I thought maybe I should be in first since this is only a three speed but that didnt last too long before it all started again. I then got mad because it nothing ever works like it is supposed to for me and kept running it until the belt gave way. I did have enough thought to bring the old one with so I switched it out and hooked up the trailer and did some other garden work. My questions for you guys are Is the 710 made to pull a plow? I had the plow adjustment tightened all the way up and it seemed to go deeper and deeper am I reading the brinly directions wrong? This thing is too heavy to pick up with the handle alone am I doing something wrong? Is that belt I bought not fit for this application? Thank You all You guys are a wealth of information.

This is a 10 HP tractor plowing with a Brinley plow, so HP is not a problem. As far as tractor popping wheelie, I would check your pulley grooves for rust build up and clean the groovea if they are. You can do a lookup about plowing. Here are some plow setup instructions http://www.weekendfreedommachines.org/techinfo/plowsetup.html

D'oh! :D I think thats why UCD posted the plow setup on this site. The green link that I posted was on 3/1/2004. Maynard posted on 4/6/2004.

Dang Mack, I could feel the sting from that one way up here! ;) As far as the belt issue, I would look into your BGB pulley/clutch setup. Sounds to me like the nylon thrust bearing is gone or close to it, allowing the belt to slip (certainly with the old belt, and now also with the new) and burn up. Once they get too hot, they will fall apart, and that's caused by friction. The only time I've had 3-speeds slip (with the correct size belt on) is when that nylon is worn or missing. Sorry, I wish I had pictures. I'll get some soon, as I have one to replace.

Is there any nylon in a 710 pulley?? I thought they were only on the FDT style tractors? I would almost bet on the bearing in the idler pulley either being set up, or setting up when it gets hot. Also possibly rusty or out of line pulleys. A belt a bit too long will also grab good cold, but slip when its hot. It is somewhat rare, but pulleys do wear out. If it is worn to the point the "V" is too wide, the belt will ride in the bottom of the pulley, thus driving from the inside of the belt rather than on the "V'd" sides of the belt where it should drive. If you can get a belt to create smoke, it is rubbing somewhere, somehow. Either 1 by slipping, 2 actually rubbing on something like another part or a pulley not turning, or 3 going on to an out of line pulley at an angle that makes one side rub or "scrub" one side of the belt more than the other. Also, check your clutch linkage. I have seen where there is a wear spot, so the mechanism will "catch" and not fully engage every time. :OI once got a hydro tractor dirt cheap because the hydro was "shot" and wouldn't move anymore. Turns out, last time the PO drove it, he pushed in the clutch pedal, and it didn't fully return. :O I saw it and paid for it and pushed it on the trailer. I did not push it off the trailer when I got home :D:D:D

Today's 4 X 4 and 2 X 4 will give about a 5" deep cutting depth. I quote Mack from a couple of months ago: "Adam, Here is a picture BLT posted awhile back. If you get it adjusted with the tail up about half an inch you will be very close. You may still need some adjusting to get it dialed in after you get a furrow or two plowed. Just give it small incremental adjustments and try it. "

You guys really came thru on the advice on this. Thank You It will take a bit to check everything out. I did use the how to set up guide initially for the plow but the way I understand it if I tighten the crank to adjust the suck all the way it should actually have a hard time staying in the ground. If the toe is pointed down too much it keep going down and turning into and anchor correct? Mine is tightened all the way and still seems to dig deep. The belt on the 710 is slipping but I just wanted to know if the dayco premimum vbelts are good to use and if a tractor running that skinny (5/8) of a belt can pull a plow without the belt slipping. I do know that the idler pulley turned free when I changed belts and when I looked at the burned up belt I noticed that the edges were rolled up but the bottom was gone and it appeared to sit in the pulleys and not go all the way to the bottom. Do I need to clean the pulleys with a wire brush or anything. Thanks again guys

Hey...... I resemble that guy, quite the handsome devil, wouldn't you say???:D:D:D I do own the rights to my likeness in all images posted on the internet. That being said, I should be compensated for all reproductions of my likeness. LOL HeHe, wouldn't that funny??? I think Bob was inspired to posting to the Green site solely by the color of my shirt.sm00sm00

Seriously though, Don't over adjust the plow, make small adjustments to "creep" up on the correct setting. Soil types change, obviously by location, moisture content and soil composition itself. Ground speed has a drastic effect on the plowing depth as well. This is where the hydros, shuttles and six speed trannys excel. The best training aid is looking for answers here, reading manuals, and seat time. Most of all, never get discouraged, and ask LOTS of questions. I was told one time, "If it's too wet, stop for an hour and have a beer. It'll be better when you go back out."
