Report on the Brooks, OR Antique Powerland show

Just got back from the show in Brooks Oregon. What a sight. I haven't been there in three years and it's fair to say the show has almost doubled in size. It was truly amazing. I met Steve Johnson from Salem, who's heavy into the garden tractors. They even had some Simplicity and Homelite rigs there. I took well over 250 photo's and have a task ahead figuring out how to post most of them. I was messmerized by all the old stationary engines chugging away. If you've never seen one, check out a show when you can. People have them set up running just about everything you can imagine. I've included a photo of probably the most outrageous use of a garden tractor I've ever seen. This sucker is insane. It's an International Harvester turbine engine mounted in an old Gibson tractor frame. The turbine spins at about 63,000rpm's and puts out around 100hp. The scream when at full throttle was absolutely deafning.[A href='http://www.wheatfarm.com'][img src='http://198.237.72.26/jet_tractor2.jpg'][/a]

Sounds like a good show. Anyone looking for the end to I-80 through Nebraska should check out Minden for a collection of the Oldies. Haven't been there in about 30 years but it was impressive then even though I wasn't much into old farm stuff at that age, grew up using it...MPH

just my opinion but with a turbo spinning @63000 rpm maybe those people should be back alittle more be a shame to have anymore people get hurt just to see an engine run

While turine's may be dangerous, I believe the fact that the turbine blades are so close to the housing that if it did shed any, they wouldn't just blow through the side of the housing. I've seen turbo's that have been oversped (small turbo on a big engine) and the housing held. It did spit bits out the pipe, but the housing didn't crack. Aircraft equipment is also built and tested to a standard much higher than in other industries. It's ironic. While I was at the show watching people just run around in front of all the heavy equipment while it was moving, I was thinking to myself that I hope nothing ever happens that would affect the show (i.e. someone getting run over) and then get home and read about the steam tractor explosion. The fact is, most of the equipment there at the show weighed well over 5 tons, some close to 30 tons, and people act like there's no danger. Kind of like the idiot kid who was skate boarding down a twisty hill while I was driving a semi last week. If I hadn't seen him and reacted fast, my truck might have had a small cooling problem. A while back I heard of a guy pulling with a tractor with tubine engine. Nobody could beat him and nobody could figure out why. Then they relized with the turbine at idle he could weigh in but when he sped it up it pushed down on the tractor with like 12,000 pounds of force. Jordan
