losing power

Recommended Posts

My AC 712 needs a rebuld but I'm trying to limp through summer since its my only mower. This week it started losing power randomly. It would mow fine for a while then just sort of idle down and die. Sometimes it does thes after mowing for a while, and sometimes right after starting. When it does this I can usualy restart it although it will run weak and sound dull instead of the usual sharp rata tat tat and then it dies again. If I let it sit for a while it will usually be ok for a bit. Is this overheating?

Thanks guys. Fuel fire and air were my first thought too. The head is definately fouling with all the blow through, and the carb is shot as thei idle adjust screw does nothing. Ill check the things you suggest too. Where is the fuel vent? On the cap?

Vent is on the side of the black button on top . Check your point gap. It should be .020" but .022" works better and may help you out with plug gap at .040" . Some of the 12 and 14 hp Kohlers carbon up the valve guide and they begin to stick the exaust valve and power drops off rapidly when this happens. Is it burning oil ?

HI, Check to see that the outlet of the muffler is lined up with the hole in the side of the hood. I have dealt with a number of these that would boil the gas in the carb because the exhaust gas is not going through the hole and is deflected back towards the carb. A blown seam in the muffler will cause the same problem. The problem is about 4 times worse with 10% ethanol. Engine will run until hot and blaa and when it cools off runs fine. Back in the 80s I build a lot of carb shields when the gas changed to terrible. Al Eden

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
