Points Question

Recommended Posts

Mike
I've owned my 916 for 13 years now, in all that time I've replaced the points only once and filed them once. What is the life expectancy of modern day points. I also can't believe I've belonged to this club for 13 years, is there a pension plan?

Mike, the only mention to ignition system in the Kohler books is to check the spark plug every 100 hours, or roughly every other year. No mention is made about changing points and condenser to give a hoot. For the most part, it is the condenser that fails first and I bet people just replace the points at the same time. On certain Briggs engines, you had no choice but to replace both because of design. I just bought a 718 that was sitting a good five years that wouldn't start (no spark). Filed and regapped the points and away we went, even with same condenser. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Isn't that kind of an oxymoron?8D

There was, but Wall Street took it all.
