Glad I decided to do an oil change

Decided to change the oil on my 716H. I change several times during the mowing season even though I probably put less than 20 hours on it all season. Anyway, when I went to remove the drain plug I found that it was barely hand-tight. Must've worked its way loose. I always check the oil level before starting the engine, but in this case I consider myself lucky because that plug could've vibrated out, without me knowing it, and goodbye engine.

The threads on the plug probably just wore out from all those oil changes! My engines with oil filters get an oil change once a year (way less than 100 hours however). Engines with a splash system I still change when they get 25 or 30 hours on them. However, I do use Amsoil small engine oil in all of my small engines.

I have had opposite problem, where the plug is too tight and hard to loosen. Last change, I oiled the threads, snugged the plug, and gave it a little more - trying to find a good balance. I might change the plug also; it's showing some wear after 30 years. Nice when preventative maintenance prevents major disaster. sm01 I use a shot glass to add an ounce to keep the oil level on the line, engine cold. Helps monitor oil consumption also. It likes a wee dram once in a while - so do I - but that's not motor oil. 8)

Good morning peeps! I’m always searching for helpful information with my AC collection. Hope to find out new information and pass on my own experience in restoration. Here are some pics of my babies. I’m still looking for front rims for the 410 so yesterday I put the 310 wheels on took it for a drive. Working pretty good but still needs some carb work. Gotta get the 310 running next. Have a great day!😁
