Spray Painting

I've done some rattle can painting before but never with a spray gun until I just did the hood of one of my 7117's. Thought I would share the before and after. I think it came out pretty good, had one small run and maybe should have done the final sanding with 600 grit instead of 400. Looks great! I prefer the paint gun as well. Once you get past the initial cost of that the paint and primer are cheaper than the spray cans. You can add hardener to the paint and it is more durable as well.

Decal kit on order, should be here in a couple days. I want to take the front end apart and check the bearings etc, paint the orange parts and rims, also have new front tires to put on.

That tractor is going to be unrecognizable from what it was. It is amazing how a goood mechanical and then cosmetic going over can prep these tractors for another few decades. Hood looks great. I have to give some thought to the pot gun myself, they simply do a much better job.

Thanks for all the comments, this is my first try with the pot gun and it really does do a good job. Just have to be careful cause it puts out a lot of paint quickly. I'm going to try using a hardener next when I do the frame. Also need a good respirator, the fumes are nasty. Mine wasn't very tight around my nose and when I got done the wife thought I had white makeup on.:D

I picked up a reasonably priced 3M half face respirator ($30)at Home Depot the other week. It comes with replaceable cartridges, that are stocked by HD (unlike HFT). It also has snap on particle filters, so I am using it for both blasting, and painting. For the remaining protection I have a few full face shields, and the there is also the hood, that came with the blaster. None of these protective items are terribly comfortable. Yet, that is the cost of staying healthy.:) Wayne

Anyone have any tips for applying decals? I read that spraying a little soapy water on first would let you move the decal around to get it just right. I tried that with the decal around the headlights and well it's in the trash now and a new one on order. Don't think I'll do that again, it just didn't stick.

I only let it dry 5 minutes or so, maybe I'll try again. The front decal around the headlights is tricky to get straight and keep it that way. Here is a picture of the side of the hood and the seat pan, they came out pretty good. Now I'm going to strip it down to the frame and paint the frame.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
