Getting my Allis 816-T into gear is more of an art form than anything else. Reverse and first aren't too bad and I am learning the secrets of second and third, but I wondered if this is normal? I just got the tractor and it is in generally good shape, and I know it doesn't have any of that sissy stuff like synchronized gears or anything, but I want to make sure I'm not the only one with this problem. Also, the manual specifies some sort of specific Allis Chalmers gear lube for the gearbox. Will regular 90 weight or maybe synthetic gear lube work as well? Thanks.

You are not alone, my 6216 is picky about shifter "finesse". It got much better when I blasted a good shot of spray lube at the shifter stub coming up out of the transaxle. I suspect the Neutral Safety switch and or the detent ball are chewed up in mine. The switch is easier to get to, so I'm going to lube that first and see if it improves. I use 90 wt in mine.
