Greasing the mower clutch

Like Marty says, it may be the belt. If you grease the clutch you may swap a screech for a slip. Try "breaking the glaze" with some sandpaper.

The noise on my 99 Sovereign when I engage the clutch is the cone clutch coming to speed. To reduce the screech, first reduce the engine speed, and then snap the clutch in quickly. Doesn't eliminate the noise but sure lessens it a lot. I think there was another earlier post on this. Roy

They will normally make a chirp when engaged when the lining is pretty new. It softens as it wears in. There is nothing to lube - bearing is sealed. You may want to disassemble and investigate if you know the sound is not right.

At one time Simplicity advised lubing of the clutch face at their service school but backed off that recommendation when clutches started wearing out in 2 years or less. Put up with the squawk-"nature of the beast!" Bill
