2010 engine help needed!

Can someone help me out? The briggs engine in my Simplicity 2010 won't start. I bought the tractor this past weekend and was told it would start with a little carb work. But it has no spark. I've checked and reset the gap, charged the battery, and remade some shoddy electrical connections. Unfortunately I cannot for the life of me figure out the electrics. There are only three wires at the points but I can't figure them out. Can I test any of them for 12v to see if perhaps my 'on/off' switch is faulty? I've posted some diagnosis and pictures at the included URL: http://www.sector13.org/jason/tractor Please take a look and let me know what I can possibly do! Thanks! Two of those three wires go back up into the engine, the third goes to your key switch. Try diconnecting the keyswitch wire and see if you get spark. If you do, then that wire is grounding out somewhere or the keyswitch is bad. If no spark still, try drawing a clean matchbook cover through the closed points to clean them. If nothing still, you mat have problems under the shroud. Try the above and see what you have. SmilinSam

I figured out that the on/off switch on the dash simply grounded impluse from the magneto. Then I cleaned the points with a super fine grit sandpaper. BINGO! I had a spark! So now on to the next problem... poor idle. Thanks everyone for their tips! jason

Hi, If you still can't get spark after doing all of the above I would suggest doing a coil conversion. It is easy cheap and you can get step by step directions in the DIY section.I hope this helps you out. take care Jim V.
