starter generator

Can someone tell me if the starter generator used on a 725 is the same as that used on early 1960's cars?My tractor originally had electric start but the previous owner gave the starter to a friend who needed it.The bracket and voltage regulator look very similar to the automotive application-will they interchange? Thanks for any help.

Robh, I believe it has to be wired different to serve as a starter and generator both. As I have a couple old 63 ford vans in the yard that was my first thought when I first got my 725. Haven't needed to see if bearings or such may inchange yet, and the moss is about to take them over by now. Run that old Sears green econoline til the rear axle fell off driving down the road, not sure I want any parts from it, ha ha..MPH

Robh, according to a local automotive generator rebuilder a starter generator has a starter field and a generator field. An auto generator has two generator fields and will not run as a motor. I made the call because I wondered about that myself. A few rebuild shops did not know. Woody

Once again, I am in awe of the amount of information available on this site. The links above would get any kid through high school shop and he/she wouldn't even know they were learning. Thanks again to all involved in maintaining this site. Bjarni

A car generator will NOT work. Al Eden wrote a great article for the site that explains these starter-generators. I've linked it in below. BTW, be aware that the old Cub Cadets used starter-generators that look the same, but turn the OPPOSITE direction....[A href='http://www.simpletractors.com/service/electrics/starter-generator.htm']http://www.simpletractors.com/service/electrics/starter-generator.htm[/a]
