Iced-Up Carbs

It's interesting that some of our members have had problems with carbs icing up. It reminds me of one warm, humid day when I was mowing with my 9020 and I lifted the hood and saw frost built up on the intake manifold. I don't know if any of you powermax owners have seen this, but it's the honest-to-God truth. Just like any refrigerant, like R-12 or R-22A, that starts in a liquid form and is expanded to a gas, the evaporation of gasoline from liquid to vapor sucks heat to the point that it can cool it's surroundings t below 32F. All of us who have Onan engines know how much heat these engines put out. It's just funny how efficient the carbs are in vaporizing the fuel. You can have frost on one part of the engine while other parts are running well above 300 F. Paul

Yup, Paul, I have experienced the same thing on both of my Allis 620,s, intake manifold frosting up on damp muggy days. Thats where I keep my brews to cool them off! Floydster

Actually I didn't mean to imply that the frost on the manifold was a problem, like some of our other members were having with their carbs. The engine ran fine, but I just thought it was kinda cool that there'd be frost built up on top of an Onan engine that runs extremely hot anyway, when its warm outside. Paul

Havent seen the frost thing on my Sears (sorry bout that) with 20 horse Onan but that's not to say it doesnt happen, I just havent seen it yet. I sure would like to find an A/C 720/620 in need of a nice low-hours Onan engine cause that Sears would make a fine "engine donor"!!! Dick

Marty, Would you care to expand on the Fish carburetor you ran on your Dodge? Better mileage? Better performance? Where did you get a Fish carburetor. I have always heard they give phenomenal mileage. Thanks, Roy

Had to call my brother about this Onan ice deal as he run one in his 420 JD for many years. never had the problem and also said there was a hose to the air cleaner off the shoud, maybe sucking warm air??? Do the AC's have have such deal on them. I run a fish carb on my 318 dodge for years and it had frost-up problems from about 20 to 35 degrees outside temp. manifold stove helped it quite a bit..just a thought if its a problem, not that I would want to ruin a good brew cooler..MPH

Banjo, you must mean it thaws at -50...Roy, I gained about 3 mpg and a fair amount of snap for a engine that had about 180 thousand on it then. I liked the fact it only has 3 moving parts in it, I like Simple. I ordered it though an add I saw in Acers USA, a paper on how to be a true farmer, a caretaker of the soil. Mike Brown is the name of the man who sold them then, not sure he still does as after a dozen or years my paper ran out when I was workin outta town, darn wish I been getting that since the 11th. Hmmmm more undone homework..MPH

Paul, I believe what your getting is from the ventura effect of the carb, what I had was snow dust melting/freezing on the outside of the carb..MPH
