Shear Key for HB-212 Snowblower Pulley

Does anybody know what kind of shear key the motor drive pulley for the snow blower takes? I think it should be an aluminum one to protect the crank but I am not sure and don't want to get a key that will shear as soon as I engage the blower. Does anybody know for sure which type of key this is? Steel, aluminum, or whatever? Thanks, Clayton

I just aquired a sovereign with a 16 horse briggs. It has a chunk of crank shaft broken off of it at the key way. I don't know if it's supposed to have a special key for that application or not. I would think there would be to prevent damage like that from happening. Scott

While I'm no expert on this, every one I've dealt with has been steel. When using it to drive a snowblower, I can't conceive of it damaging a crankshaft. The engagement lever for a snowblower is spring-loaded, and the whole idler clutch mechanism is simply an "over-center" design. If you struck something like the end of a curb or step, it should disengage the snowblower before it would damage the crankshaft.

Kent, Thank you very much. I was thinking along those lines but... sometimes I get hurt when I do that (think, that is). Clayton
