Front axle

While mowing this past summer with my 6216 I noticed that it would ocassionally scalp the grass in my yard. I thought that was odd since Simplicity tractors have a floating deck that is attached to the front axle. While I was tearing my tractor apart I found out why. The previous owner had drilled 2 holes in the axle and bolted it to the frame. Go figure. Any easy way to fill these holes?

If I get you correctly, he drilled trough the axle into the frame and bolted it so it would not pivot ? If thats the case, just take them out and all should return to normal. Normal mowing duty should no stress the axle to where the holes should be welded shut. I'd get some orange tape and make them dissapear and keep out the water when washing her down. Sound like he was prepping it for lawn tractor racing.
