A different kind of seat time

We haven't been getting enough snow lately for me to get much tractor seat time. So, my keister's been logging quite a few hours in this seat right here:

I've mainly been going for smelt at night after I get off of work. But, yesterday I cut out of the office a few hours early and joined my buddy to try for some herring. We did okay.

And I took this little sushi bite in honor of Mark (fishnwiz):

Dang them's some nice fish!!:D:D

Me and the wife got licenses last year for the first time in a long time.

There's something special about showing a kid how to fish, then they out fish the parents.sm00sm00

No more pro bono tractor stuff. All information from yours truly will be followed by an invoice for six beer battered smelt and a 'Lite' of your choice.:D:D

Quite some time ago I had a neighbor who got into salmon fishing and at the same time I won a smoker. He found out about the smoker and one day he came over with two fish with this proposal. Could I smoke both and then I could keep one. That worked for two summers. Got to the point we were giving smoked salmon away at times.

Those are some awesome looking herring! How do you cook these or do you just pickle them? You really can't just deep fry and eat these whole like smelt due to the large amount of bones, correct??. That looks like they would be a BLAST to catch on light rods. How many can you take?

Regarding the brown trout...We have WORLD CLASS browns off of Milwaukee harbor. They are a differnt strain then the German Browns and grow to the mid 30 lb range...SLOBS!!! Not good eating but great catching and releasing.

I have never been much of a stream fishing guy because of the crowds that fish the tribs of lake Mich in our area. Its a ZOO and I am NOT a big crowd guy when it comes to fishing!

Thanks for sharing your pics..Nice fish!

Mark:

The flesh in these herring is very similar to a rainbow trout. So, I cook them the same way. Basically just throw them in a skillet with some herbs. They're tasty. On this particular lake the daily limit is 11 per license. So, we were allowed 22. The herring are fun to catch. They fight hard for their size, and when hooked have a "flight" pattern unlike any other fish.

Sorry to hear you don't like stream/river fishing. Being on the river with my fly rod catching steelhead or big browns is my absolute favorite. And I never have to worry about crowds. That pic of me and Matt standing in the river was taken at our favorite stretch of river for browns during the hex hatch. It's 3 miles up river from the nearest place to park. Few people are willing to walk that far against the current (bank's an unnavigable swamp). And, we fish from dark until about 2:00 a.m, which is what you have to do to get the big ones. Most people are too scared of the booger man to be that far out that late at night.

Fishing night is DIEHARD for sure. That explains the lack of crowds! I do the same for walleye here in Wis. I LOVE river fishing, but the crowds destroy what is special about it in my area.

Never had herring fried...sounds great. Only herring we have around her are in Lake Mich and we don't catch them off Milw. There is a big whitefish bite that has become real big a few hrs north in the bay of Greenbay.Eating quality is excellent as is smoking quality.

Thanks for the info on my second passion.

That's a good looking Brittany unless I miss my guess. I had a liver and white. He was quite a dog and is very much missed.

id="quote">Yup, Reggie's a Brittany. He actually belongs to my friend Matt (the red haired guy in the pics). I generally prefer German Shorthairs, but I gotta admit that Reggie's turned out to be a pretty decent bird dog:

Nice Walleye Mike!!

Nice mess of birds

Two of my favorite things to eat!

Ice conditions are very sketchy around these parts...That plus the fact that I am messing with a screwed up back has prevented me from hunting and fishing for anything but tractors. Bummer C

All of these great game pictures have me hungry...Going to the freezer for some Bluegill fillets for sup!! MMM MMM GOOD!sm01

Mike:

I took a peak at your profile . . . that's a nice pike you're holding! I love a good pike dipped in egg, coated with instant mashed potatoes, and then fried in some peanut oil. Yum!

Anybody else got some fishing/hunting pics to share? Whether you're sitting in a tree stand, a shanty, a boat, etc, it's all alternative seat time, and we love pics of seat time results.

Yep, the pike are excellent eating quality and better then walleye a lot of times...I don't keep them unless they are under 30" I fish two other trophy lakes and the min is 42 and 50 on thoses two lakes so I have caught and released a few real slobs!Mike, its great to have another fishing guy on the site! Now if you will excuse me I have something very important to attend to while they are still HOT!!:drl:drl:drl;)

You asked for them...These were taken last year when I was on the water 73 days. Sorry I don't have pics of me holding...only my s[ze 13 foot. I fish by myself 99% of the time. Not because I smell like fish...I just can't find anyone to get up at 4a.m. for what amounts to a 1-2 hr bite on most days...at least on this heavy fished lake. Limit is 3 eyes 18" Min.Bass limit is 1 at 18"...I release ALL of the bass! Pike is 32 on this lake...I catch a lot and keep 1-2 a year TOPS! Some days 8-10 walleye are caught and 20-30 Bass if the bite is hot. I am big catch and release guy.
