Kohler Repair

I have a 16 HP single cylinder Kohler that threw a rod and made a hole out the side of the block. Can this cast iron block be brazed to make the repair?? Or should I be looking for another block?? Thanks.

It depends on the size, type, and location of the hole. One consideration is that the block could have been distorted by the impact. Have a competent machine shop check alignment carefully. Another consideration is spending substantial money on new internal parts in a "repaired" block. I have successfully repaired blocks by preheating the surrounding area and using an appropriate electric rod. Because of the porosity of cast metals, sometimes repairs will "weep". I apply a saltwater solution to the repaired area to promote rust, which will plug any pores.

I have a 301-K which also tossed her cookies at low rpm's. No holes in block but does have a chip on the extreme bottom edge of the bore. It's exactly the size of a thumbnail and been told it should not be a problem if it is smoothed up lightly around it's edge. No visible cracks in that area either. I'm hoping it's good to go in light of the fact that anything with the name Kohler on it AIN'T CHEAP!! Dick

I agree with Dutch - Make sure block is aligned. I have welded them also and always drill holes at ends of all crack endings, bevel all pieces so it can be filled with weld and "burned" clear through when welding. Us a good grade cast-iron rod. I don't grind the weld down if I don't have to, as it will have a "gusset" effect. I apply slight heat around the area and after welding pack it in Lime (you can buy it in 50lb. bags) and let it cool that way for 24 hrs. If you haven't welded cast iron, have an experienced hand do it...
