Tiny Tach on Cast Iron Briggs

The cast iron Briggs 30000 series fires on every revolution. The 2-stroke tiny tachs work great. You wrap the red wire about 3 to 4 wraps around the spark plug wire, and connect the white wire to ground. It will read rpms and keep track of running time. The K series Kohler engines fire on every other revolution. The M series (magnum) Kohlers fire on every revolution. Good Luck! Mike S.

It doesn't matter what series engine you have. If you have a 4 stroke engine there is no way any one cylinder can fire on each revolution because it would then be a 2 stroke engine. The crank must turn at least 2 revolutions to complete the combustion process. If you wrap the red wire around one plug wire you will get the wrong rpm from a 2 stroke Tiny Tach especially on a 12 hp engine.. He didn't say the cylinder fired. He said the plug fired on each stroke. While the explosion in the cylinder will only occur at the top of stroke two (compression)when the plug fires; the plug can also fire harmlessly at the top of stroke four (exhaust). The Onans fire this way too. Steve

Can anybody tell me if a Cast Iron Briggs (300421 12HP Horizontal shaft) fires every rev or only every other rev. Am not home right now and don't want to pull my points cover if not necessary to see if the points only open every other rev or every rev. If worse comes to worse and they only fire when needed, I will still get the Tiny Tach and just multiply by two when I look at it. The ad for the Tiny Tach states "for any 2 or 4 stroke engine that fires every rev". Thanks,

Only a 2 stroke single cylinder fires each revolution. When you buy the tiny tach specify you have a 4 stroke single cylinder. Tiny tach is made for each application and you don't have to do math while you sit on the tractor. Just remember you have a 4 stroke engine. Woody

I just got off the phone with Tiny Tach. At first they said to use the 2C version of Tiny Tach because the engine is assumed to fire on every revolution. I then asked if this pertained to the old Briggs engines with the points on the side of the engine running off the camshaft. At that point he confirmed that the 4C version was in order because the spark fires every other revolution. I was only referring to the Briggs cast iron engines with the points on the side and the cam gear is twice the size of the crank gear. The camshaft could not possibly open the points each revolution. I did make myself sound like I was talking about ALL engines, but I was thinking only of the engines involved. Sorry. Woody

Everybody, Thank you very much for your responses here on this question. Woody, thanks for calling Tiny Tach and asking them about this. I really appreciate this. I will be ordering mine soon from them. I want to get my tractor running the way it should and this will make things much easier. Thanks again everybody, Clayton
