270 was sold to Jon Deere and 373 was sold to Wheelhorse

They both have gear starters and use igntion coils.

They have different type number flywheels. From there I run out of gas.wah

If I remember correctly the JD engines are built like the Cub Cadet engines, not flat bottom like WheelHorse and Simplicity. The Cub Cadet flywheels have four bolt holes on a smaller bolt circle than the Simplicities. That may be the difference. That is the only difference I have seen between the Cub Cadet and Simplicity flywheels, since I have both.

is that a d or b....

I thought the last character being a b meant breakerless ignition.

I believe the flywheels should interchange as you can convert a breakerless to points but they are different... the points flywheel has nice timing marks T and S where the breakerless flywheel does not.

if the difference was the amp of the charging system im sorry i cant help... i guess you'd have to count the magnets
