mower deck re-assembly

I've been re-building an 885 (42") mower deck. Finally got the arbors apart and new bearings in place. Question I have now is how critical is the washer stack up? I destroyed many of the washers taking the pulleys off and quite honestly, the stack up as it is originally configured seems a bit strange. Seems to me that if all three spindle pulleys are at the same height and the cutting blades have ample clearance to the chassis, everything should work fine. As long as the main drive pulley is within location spec to drive the entire mower, things should work fine. Am I missing something here?

I would also add that all of the pulleys need to be aligned with the key slots.

If you don't keep the same stack up of parts, you risk the chance of not tightening everything in the arbor and possibly some bearing damge prematurely down the line..
