AC 410 Loader Upgrades....

GLPointon

Recommended Posts

I've got that project itch again...

But this one is a 10 point Upgrade to my AC410/Loader tractor. This 410 & the loader was restored last year and since then I've come up with this "wish list" of improvements to do:

1. Upgrade to 16hp engine

2. Remove the Electric Lift (not needed on dedicated loader tractor)

3. Replace front axle pivot bushings

4. Replace steering bushings

5. Upgrade the "poorman's power steering" with heavier rated bearings

6. Rebuild the "Ross" steering gearbox (a bit sloppy)

7. Replace fuel tank (leak on seam)

8. More frame clearance for PTO belt to hydro pump

9. Bigger Ag tires

10. Upgrade loader leveling system pivots to handle more weight. New hydraulic cylinders will lift more than levelers will handle...NOT for long sm01

This upgrade will make it a good worker for yrs to come...

Sounds good! Little and big things...they will all make a difference, I'm sure.

Lemme tell ya guys...if you haven't seen this rig in person, you need to. I'm SURE it will be at the 100th anniv GOTO next year in LaPorte. ;)

This is the 16HP Kohler engine I got from our VP Mr. Osenga

DSCI5408.JPG

DSCI5420.JPG

Out with the 10hp...This engine runs great so it's going in another RBT waiting out on the "deadline"

DSCI5439.JPG

DSCI5501.JPG

Looks like this 16HP Kohler was a factory rebuild.

DSCI5504.JPG

I installed all new gaskets/seals in it and gave it a quick paint job.

DSCI5505.JPG

I removed the Electric Lift I added after the tractor restoration. I wont need it now that this is a dedicated loader tractor.

DSCI5494.JPG

DSCI5509.JPG

Removed the front axle...below is one of the pivot bushings...it had a bit of slop sm00

DSCI5518.JPG

DSCI5520.JPG

DSCI5523.JPG

above is the steering pivot bushing (in front) and the new one in back, I had to buy in 2 pcs. I used the bronze bushing vs the harder (left) one. I think it's better that the bushing wear vs the pivot assy...

DSCI5536.JPG

DSCI5544.JPG

DSCI5489.JPG

next I removed the Ross steering gearbox. was getting very sloppy...

DSCI5491.JPG

One of the bearings ate up the plastic retainer. and these rebuild kits are over $100...so I went to my semi-local tractor boneyard and found another one with good bearings...AND a new fuel tank that dosen't leak sm01

DSCI5555.JPG

DSCI5557.JPG

DSCI5558.JPG

DSCI5560.JPG

Got it all cleaned/adjusted/thrust bearing added/painted and ready to install

DSCI5571.JPG

DSCI5569.JPG

I cleaned and lightly sanded the new gas tank and gave it a coat of clearcoat.

DSCI5573.JPG

DSCI5574.JPG

drive out the old bushing...Install the new ones...

DSCI5582.JPG

DSCI5589.JPG

Install the axle and the pivot pin

DSCI5593.JPG

DSCI5594.JPG

Next I'm gonna upgrade the "poormans power steering" I installed last year by replacing the thrust bearings (on right) with the bearing on the left which has more rollers and holds more grease in the carrier...

DSCI5596.JPG

and also added the "bike inner tube dust boot" as suggested by Phandad's prior post.

DSCI5598.JPG

DSCI5601.JPG

Installed the Ross steering gearbox and the linkages

DSCI5603.JPG

That is about half the upgrade list...so there will be more to come sm01

Not sure Ron, I know that the willys Jeeps used then as well as many other vehicles, larger versions...I hope!! they dont seem safe enough to use doing 70mph in a 2 ton vehicle XX(

Glad youre on another project Greg! Since I am a maintenance "process" guy---I'm curious (about things that matter not to normal people) if the loader is getting in your way... Looking forward to following your progress!!

I think I only have jobs 1,8,9,10 left to complete. But number 10 is a biggie.I got the new 16hp engine in but found a problem...I asked for help on the forum and here is what I did.

DSCI5626.JPG

DSCI5627.JPG

The front shaft for the Electric PTO on the 10hp (below) is 1 1/8" dia. and the 16hp is only 1"dia.(above) I found a spacer collar on E-bay for only a few bucks that worked great.

DSCI5628.JPG

also the exhaust outlet on the 10hp is 3/4" dia and the 16hp (below) is 1" dia...so being a gasman, I made an adaptor from gas pipe fittings to go from the 1" engine to the 3/4" muffler

DSCI5753.JPG

DSCI5747.JPG

DSCI5630.JPG

DSCI5770.JPG

got the PTO mounted and the mule drive on...

DSCI5769.JPG

Below you can see where I cut some of my sub-frame away to give the pto belt more clearance...it was rubbing a tiny bit causing it to wear faster...

DSCI5766.JPG

DSCI5774.JPG

DSCI5778.JPG

Now for the most important repair/upgrade:After I finished this resto last year, while using it, a bucket cylinder "blew a head" caused by a stuck relief valve causing sever overpressureXX(

DSCI3010.JPG

DSCI3017.JPG

DSCI3135.JPG

I bought a new pair of 2" dia cylinders to replace the 1 1/2" dia damaged one.

DSCI3132.JPG

Below; the new cyl is too wide to fold down into the bracket

DSCI3130.JPG

I had to widen the brackets (below) to accomodate the wider cylinders.

DSCI5816.JPG

DSCI5551.JPG

As a bonus the cylinders improved the digging/scooping power of the loader ALOT.But...below is the problem...the weakest link is the leveling system pivots. During some heavy digging they bent very bad (thats why the paint is popping off)..

DSCI5771.JPG

DSCI5545.JPG

DSCI5547.JPG

but here is the permanant fix:

DSCI5549.JPG

DSCI5550.JPG

DSCI5799.JPG

DSCI5804.JPG

DSCI5806.JPG

DSCI5807.JPG

DSCI5808.JPG

DSCI5809.JPG

DSCI5810.JPG

Now these pivots Won't bend...I'm sure of it sm01

DSCI5811.JPG

DSCI5812.JPG

DSCI5813.JPG

DSCI5814.JPG

I took her for a test spin & cant wait to get in the dirt & really push it sm01

DSCI5818.JPG

DSCI5819.JPG

DSCI5823.JPG

The last thing on my wish list is bigger rear Ag tires...they are coming soonSorry this was so long...but I hope you enjoyed the show sm01

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
