This should provide some insight:

There's a lot involved in professional turf management like that. I'd like to see the initial process of laying out the design. My old man takes an annual trip for training each year, specifically for baseball fields. His focus is more on infield and mound construction, but the turf guys are doing their thing along side him. He works on a mound with the coaches and starting pitchers for months in the winter and early spring, and that is for local high school and collegiate fields. I can't imagine the time that goes into the pros.

id="quote">The guys that used to do the designs on our football field in college used what was essentially just a big overhead projector-type thing. That's the best way I can think of to describe it, anyway.
