I'm guessing the 12HP Briggs in a 2012 looks like this one that was in my HB-112 (has external balance gears):

Vs this one that's in my Homelite T-12 (no balance gears)

Hopefully someone will confirm.

Bill, your top photos are a pre circa 1971, dual counterbalanced 12hp common to early 12hp models.

While I know the T-12 was marketed at 12hp, I'd sure want to run the numbers on that to confirm 12hp. I've only had a couple of T-12's here (gone now) and I never checked them to confirm a single counterbalance 12hp. Seems as the dual counterbalanced engines went away about the time of the appearance of the rbt models, when most engines were 13+ hp.

Reed,I have run the numbers on the T-12 Briggs and come up with 12 HP.The numbers are 301431-0131-01-7111191. I believe the engine is original as my Dad got the tractor in 1974, used, but in very good shape. That said, there are some oddities. The head has some "humped" fins and the engine is rated at 3300rpm. Some pics:

I thought it is a "detuned" 13 or 14 HP unit, but I thought the finned head was only on 15 and 16 HP engines.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
