Kohler Starter Question

Recommended Posts

MPH

After filling my Kohler with heatting oil last night it turned a lot easier today, giving me enough hope to see if the starter works. Jumping off a battery with 14 volts I got no reaction, so I pulled it, whatta pain. Took it the local NAPA and had it tested, he got it spinning good, but it took 18 volts and 25 amps. Any hints what I should look for when I tear it down?

Not an expert & just giving some guesses here:

-Very worn bushings/bearings armature hitting field coil & starter/generator body getting very hot while engine is running.

-Look for burnt spots on armature coil.

-Very worn armature brushes.

Wish I could help more.

Before you put it back on, hook it up to a 12 volt battery and

see if it spins freely or if it seam to drag.

If it was mine I would take it apart clean it and stick in a set of brushes. If it sat for a long time they the bearings or bushings

can get crudded up.

Good luck

Jim
