I've been staring at the Belt and Blade reference manual, and at Jacks small engines, for awhile and I'm not getting anywheres.

What size and length are the belts going from the cone clutch to the deck, and the belt in the deck itself?

I want to run to Fleet and get some cheap belts just to test the deck.

Thanks, and if someone could show me a fast way to do this myself, that would be great. I sure struggle with belts for some reason.

By the way, I came up with 1/2 by 74.1" and 1/2 by 82.1"

Am I on the right track?

Belt length depends on the deck size and mfg#.

I believe the 3416 tractor takes the same size belts as the 7000 series since it has the cone clutch. You should check the deck mfg# for the belt part numbers. The 7100 series deck drive belts are different since the mid PTO is different. Did you check under the hood for part listings? The newer tractor have part numbers listed there.

The info I've accumulated for 7000 series tractors:

42" deck:

arbor drive: #108209 or #1719819 (82.1") now #1723391 (82.0")

I've also seen #1656960 (84.1") for some deck models

deck drive: #176439 or 2176439 (74.1")

48" deck:

arbor drive: #1657044 (93.1")

deck drive: #163011 or 1722039 (71.6")

Its a 48" deck. No MFG# on deck, no numbers under the hood.

Try a 990886 and see if it is close.

O.K., so that gets me a 1722039 71.6"

And a 165048 85.2"

So a cheap 72" and 85" will be my starting point.

O.K., so I freed up the spindles as best I could, freed up the tensioner for the belt on the deck, put it on and tried it out. Judging by the unbelievably loud ROAR at all times with the deck engaged, sounds like it needs new bearings.

The top pulley on the deck, the flat idler, the V idler, and the other pulley on the cone clutch look to be for a 5/8" belt. The V pulley even looks like it lines up with the 5/8" groove on the cone clutch better than the 1/2" groove. Does the pulley on the mid pto go in one spot for the mower and one for the snowblower? Maybe I need to switch it?

From everything I read, it should be a 1/2" belt from the cone clutch to the deck. Is that right?

Ryan, the mowers have 1/2" drive belts and on the cast iron driven ones, the belt runs deep in the groove. The only thing that I can think of that uses the 5/8th's belt is the tiller.

Sounds good Bob. Thanks a lot.
