I have a friend who has a 1997 Reagent. He said that the hydrostatic trans does not work properly. He was also told that the hydro units on some of the Reagent were bad. I am going to look at it, however was just wondering if anyone has any insight of the history of this model. He says it has plenty of fluid, but it can hardly make it up a hill or go in reverse. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

There is a valve to release the drive, so you can move it manually. Check and make sure it is fully engaged. Mine is on the back, behind the frame. Just a thought.

Regents are notorious for bad hydros. They are not seviceable as to fluid either. They run hot. You could try dropping the rear end, turn it upside down, flush it and refill with synthetic. Sometimes they come back as the hydro fluid turns too thick..

Thanks guys for all the info. I'll probably try to make sure the valve release is working properly. Not sure how much time and labor it is to flush the trans. I'm wondering what the success rate is for the flush. Didn't really look at it too much yet. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for all the help.

id="quote">+1I believe they are the Tufftorq K46. My Dad had one of these trannys on a Husqvarna lawn tractor and it went bad after 22 hours. Lucky for him it was fixed under warranty. Google the K46.I've got a Landlord DLX and when I bought it, the 18 hp Vanguard was bad, but I pretty much knew a Simplicity lawn tractor would find its way to CL with a bad tranny, but a good engine. I waited about 6 months or a year, can't remember and sure enough found a donor tractor. Don't remember now if it was a Regent or a Broadmoore, but the engine was/is a 14 hp Vanguard and was a drop-in replacement.Good luck with your tractor.Bill

Guys,

I googled the "Tuff Torq K56A" like leave suggested. According to a forum I was on, I saw that the trans does have a drain plug and it seems they are serviceable. However, the procedure seems somewhat confusing and tedious. Most complaints is that they have a hard time filling the tranny and purging the air out to get them to work. Is the transmission oil just a 10W30 oil? And if so, do you recommend refilling with synthetic 10W30?. I think that I'm going to try and find the fill tube and just add at this point. I used compressed air to blow the junk off of the tranny and I got a ton of junk. That makes me think that (1) it was leaking out oil and (2) it was probably running hot. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I think I recommend googling a K46, not a K56 - hopefully you googled the right tranny... dOd

Leeave, I looked at the tranny in my tractor and it was a K56A trans. So that is what I googled. It was a good start though.
