I recently purchased a simplicity 5212.5H for my son, it had not been run in a while and had water in fuel tank. The water was removed , new battery and oil and it ran and I mowed for about 30 min. now it will not stay running with out the choke pulled out. I put an in-line fuel filter on it. any help would greatly be appreciated

sounds like the carb needs rebuilding

Hi,

When I purchased my '88 4212, the carb bowl was filled with what looked like butterscotch pudding! I installed a rebuild kit, but that was wasted $. there are portions of that carb, and passages too difficult to clean. there was a diaphragm like chamber partition that was rusted out. So I settled on buying a new carb @ $140.

There are several postings, about 5212.5s lately, relating to OK at WOT, but surging at idle speeds.

1. got to have the correct filter (if it is a gravity feed make sure it is a 70micron filter, the 120 micron filter starves the engine).

2. make sure the fuel line is clean, (and unobstructed) In your case replace it with with good quality fuel line, not the plastic junk from the hardware stores. I found that the B&S line is the best @ $2 a foot. It will perform for many years.

3. Make sure all the intake connections of the carb to the engine are tight and not leaking.

Any other questions feel free to PM me.
