A/C B1 Magneto #296834 Problems!!!

I have an Allis Chalmers B1 with a Briggs & Stratton model 19D motor. I recently lost spark and come to the conclusion that I needed a new magneto. I looked all over for a replacement magneto 296834 or even a cross reference. They seem to be a rare part! Any ideas were to get one?

Thanks, Craig

Ray is correct....I needed to replace mine a while back and ebay was the only place I could find one. Be careful after you do this project on how you route the sparkplug wire. The material on the newer mags is more plastic then rubber and is susceptible to melting very easy compared to the original oem part.

In case you find a used Briggs engine for parts.

FYI = Those 296834 ignition coils were used on other models such as models 23D and most 14000 series. Any possible donor candidate will have external points.

I don't see any magneto's on Ebay that match the part number I need. Anybody ever change over to a electronic ignition on the 19D?

That appears to be the same one I installed in my model 19.

I will be very interested in the question about converting a 19d to an electronic ignition. As far as I know.....the three leg magneto will not work with the sure fire ignition systems. I am not sure if you could change the flywheel that can accept a two leg coil....then you could use a sure fire or other electronic ignition????? maybe? has anyone tried this? thanks. JH

Well I got my answer. I called B&S to find out if the 19d could be converted to electronic ignition, and they told me NO. It had something to do with the polarization of the magnet and the four bolt armature. He recommended to salvage up OEM parts, but they are getting very scarce and expensive.

Maybe some of the experts can recommend a replacement motor that would fit in the B1 without to many modifications.

On this subject, is there a way to bench test coils or mags?

I probably have 4 or 5 model 19's on the shelf....

I have a Briggs Model ZZ and a 1944 Onan generator where the ignition coil failed so I used the magneto points and converted to a battery powered ignition. To make it easier, I used the Point Saver to switch the conventional coil. See overnightsolutiions.com or Kirk's engines.
