fishnwiz Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 I am having an issue with the charging system on my Briggs 16 twin. At the battery its only 12,5 volts. At the engine I am at 13.6. I do not have a wire diagram and can't tell where the wires run to from the engine back? Can I run charging wires direct to the battery from the engine?
RayS Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Do you have a product number? I got most of the wiring diagrams.
fishnwiz Posted May 12, 2014 Author Posted May 12, 2014 Ray This is on a Gilson tractor. Would the charging circuit be the same on most of these?
BLT Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 If you have electric start and headlights only, my guess is that you have a two circuit charge system and on the engine you have two wires coming out of it, one for charge (DC) and one for lights (AC).
fishnwiz Posted May 12, 2014 Author Posted May 12, 2014 These wires run into the steering tower and I cannot tell where they are hooked up to. They have to run back into the wire loom somewhere before the selonoid? I was just going to run from the charging coil wires at the engine back to the battery direct. Would this damage the battery in any way? Would I need a heavy gauge wire to charg the battery if I did this? It should NOT drain the battery if wired like this?
BLT Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Mark, the unregulated charge should be 3 amps, so wire size could be 16 - 18 gauge wire. On the engine side of the connector plug, red wire, you should feel a bump. That should be a blocking diode to prevent any discharging. Now if it is connected to the key switch and with the connector unplugged , probe with a VOM the red wire side, tractor, and turn the key on and off to see if it is connected to the switch. If is positive you might a dirty connection somewhere.
fishnwiz Posted May 12, 2014 Author Posted May 12, 2014 Thanks Robert. I will check the connections. There was a large amount of corrosion on the positive cable at the battery. Somewhere along the line there was alot of jerri rigging of the wires. Someone bypassed the starter portion of the ignition and put in a push button start on the front panel. The key still must be in the on position to start.
