Soft Ride Valve

Does anybody know how this valve in the vickers Hydro works? Anyone know the function of the different check valves? I have the Simplicity large frame garden tractor service and repair manual but it doesn't have a very good vickers section except how to take it apart. Is there a better service manual? Maybe one with detailed internal operation? dan

Dan, I have a Vickers manual laying around somewhere. I'll look for it tonight. As I recall it is only around 10 or 12 pages. If you like I can copy it for you. Don't remember now how detailed the info in the manual is. E-mail me with your address and I'll copy it for you Monday or scan and e-mail it to you if it is not too many pages. Brent

I posted the manual pages in following links. Change the last part of the link from /vickers_1.jpg to /vickers_2.jpg etc up to page 12 (/vickers_12) to view all pages 1-12. I posted these as images 25% the size of the full scan. In order to see them very well you'll probably have to blow them up a bit. Dan - I'll mail a photocopy to you Monday with better quality photos. I did not see any copyright on the manual so I think it's ok to do this. If you are referring only to a "soft ride valve", I have a Sunstrand series 15 in my powermax tractors with what they call an "acceleration valve" which may be similar. This valve smooths out the jerk you could have by rapidly moving the hydrostatic lever. Hydro static oil like all liquids is "incompressible". In other words, if you get a pipe full of oil at pressure, that oil is as hard as a rock because it doesn't compress like air does. In simple terms, if you move the hydrostatic lever rapidly, the oil moves rapidly, and can set up a hammering effect. The acceleration valve is a heavy spring loaded check valve that smooths out this jerky effect. Paul
