Simplicity Tractor Kohler Command 15hp Blowing oil

Hello,

I am hoping some of the experts out there can help me with my backyard mechanic problem. I have a 2005 Simplicity with a Kohler Command 15hp engine in it that is currently acting up. It just started to blow smoke heavily and die shortly thereafter. Upon further inspection, it is blowing oil out the breather tube into the air cleaner base into the carburetor, enough to smother the engine. If I disconnect the tube and let it spray, the engine runs fine. I pulled off the valve cover to see if there was any blockage that was obvious, and there is not. Everything appears OK, but I am far from an expert. I also checked compression to see if it is due to bad rings or something, and I have just under 180 psi. So, wondering if there is someone out there that can tell me what I have going on? What do I need to replace? Please be simple in explanation, as I have never tore into one of these before. And yes, I have gone through the service manual online to no avail. http://www.kohlerengines.com/onlinecatalog/pdf/tp_2339_d.pdf I may have read right through my problem and not realized it! Please share your wealth of knowledge, and thanks so much in advance!

Check your dipstick seal, sucking air can cause crankcase pressure. Sounds weird but its true. I went through the same thing with a 16hp Briggs.

Sounds like a breather valve problem.

Check to see that your crankcase is not overfilled with a gas/oil mix. When the fuel pump failed on my CH 25, it blew the overflow into the carb. It was dumping gas from the pump (in the valve cover) into the oil. Fortunately no damage.

Check oil level....I agree!

Thanks everyone! Looks like you are right, oil level, or should I say gas/oil mix problem. I checked it and it was high, and then drained it and it was very thin, and smelled of gas. So after filling it back up with oil it is working fine. Now to figure out why the gas is getting in there. Thanks all!

You will probably have the same problem again. If your fuel pump is in the valve cover (left one as you sit on the tractor) you will need to replace it. On mine, the pump was not re-buildable. I had to buy the cover with the pump installed. $80. Good luck!
