Electric PTO Tip

The electric PTO on my Landlord DLX over time got where it would engage on a cold start, but once worked and hot, if I cut it off, would not cut back on. I thought that perhaps the leaky crank seal I replaced a few weeks ago had left the PTO oil soaked and maybe to slickery to work - didn't know.

Did some mowing today and heard what I think is a noisy spindle bearing and needing to mow, I switched the 50 inch deck for my spare 38 inch deck. This also gave me a chance to rule out the deck causing any potential PTO or belt slippage problems due to a tight spindle or maybe idler bearing seizing.

Mowed a bit with the 38 inch deck and no bearing noise, but the PTO refused to come on after working it hard.

So I did some searching on the internet and found that the PTO can be adjusted. There is a gap where the PTO pulls together and three windows to get to it. I re-gapped mine to .015 inches and now the PTO works like a new unit again.

So my tip is - if your electric PTO ain't working or is intermittent, check the gap.

Thanks!

Bill

Great tip! My Landlord has an electric clutch, that just started acting up. Mowed the front yard, and shut it off for a minute. Went to reengage, and nothing.

Is the adjustment with the 3 nuts holding it together?

Ken procedure should be in operators book and also I remember Al Eden mentioning that from time to time re burnishing the clutch keeps it in shape.

OK Bob, what is re burnishing?

I would guess breaking the glazed or shiny surface that can develope?

When you change a disk clutch, you resurface the flywheel. And I know shiny disk brake rotors do not allow pads to seat well at times.

My guess, anyone else?
