Scouter16 Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Hi all, last year i acquired an old simplicity 7119 that had a Briggs and Stratton 16hp put in it to replace the old Kohler motor. I received it from a friend who collects simplicity but didn't want this one because it had a non original motor, painted red, and he already had a 7119. However who ever installed the engine messed the wiring up. The wiring was totally butchered (no offence to the meat man) key started the tractor but didn't shut it off. It turned the lights on and off and cranked the starter that was all. there was a separate switch to kill the engine. Well this switch failed on me and wouldn't kill the engine so i put up with it for a while then when i replaced the battery i decided to tackle the wiring. I think i have it figured out, but how exactly would you guys wire this engine in. It has one wire that goes from the solinod to the starter for power, 1 charging wire and 1 wire to kill the engine. Trying to go off the original schematic to this engine isn't hard but i want to play it safe and make sure its right. I'm used to the older style 16hp with the generator starter. This is much simplier and i think i'm trying to make it more complex. haha Thank you
Ronald Hribar Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 you need a briggs ignition switch which is grounded
BLT Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 First of all don't connect kill wire to anything. Kohler uses a hot wire to energize 12V coil and if you do that to a Briggs you BLOW OUT magneto. On tractor there is a product number 169XXXX either on driveshaft tunnel or lower LH front frame rail. Then you can get a wire diagram. Also available are chapters of the Simplicity repair manual http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/default.aspx?filename=ifDDFO9jwJ9iGclRzOfEP5NRQpe . Also, once you get wiring figured out , can send a wire diagram add on using a Bosch relay to solve your ignition problem.
Scouter16 Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 Alright i will have to get one, i might have one on the shelf who knows. Im not sure where the wire goes, ill have to look when i get home however i believe it goes under the cover.
Scouter16 Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 I do know the 7119 is an older model and had the series 1 engine in it.
PhanDad Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 Ryan,Here's some scribbled on wiring diagrams that I used when I installed a Briggs 16HP with S/G in my 17GTH-L that originally had a KT17. I changed ignition switches to the Briggs "magneto" type. As BLT stated, don't hook a +12v source to the Briggs "kill" wire or this is what your mag will look like: 7117 Wiring Diagram: 7116 Wiring Diagram: 7016H Wiring Diagram:
BLT Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 Go to pg 3-25 fig 22 http://www.thepowerportal.com/simplicitytechpubs/TP_500_973_01_SV_SMA_Sec6.pdf . That should be an early version with KT 19 wire diagram. My sketch is for using the Kohler ignition switch and a Bosch relay for grounding the Briggs mag.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPYRQVANrx0When you power up the relay, you unground the magneto so the Briggs can run.
PhanDad Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 Bob, The 87A connection must be the normally closed contacts, correct?

Scouter16 Posted May 25, 2014 Author Posted May 25, 2014 Okay thank you for the wiring diagrams those due help. Unknowingly I did end up cooking the coil as I jumped the gun a little to try to get this thing going. I replaced the coil with a new one from napa and now I am only receiving a little spark. I followed the directions on how to replace it per manufacture spec of the new coil any ideas what might be the issue?
Scouter16 Posted May 25, 2014 Author Posted May 25, 2014 Magnetron coil I have been thinking about it, i might have pulled a stupid moment and possibly installed the coil backwards.
BLT Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 If memory is spot on, coil is mounted with wire on the right and the snaking back to carb side and out.
Scouter16 Posted May 26, 2014 Author Posted May 26, 2014 Yeah you are right thanks! for some reason I used my logic not memory of what it was. I thought the wires go out the left so they must be oriented that way. Wrong! haha thanks for the help! it is greatly appreciated! I went through switched it around and she runs great now. Now i gotta finish up the proper wiring.
Scouter16 Posted May 27, 2014 Author Posted May 27, 2014 One final question i have everything else figured out however does the alternator wire go to the L terminal or the B terminal on the swith? looking at the diagram from a 7116 it looks like it should go to the L terminal. The power when key is on.
BLT Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 Use the "L" terminal as it turns off the voltage when engine stops and prevents any "leaking" off the regulator and draining the battery. The charge current will find its way back to the battery when running..
