Simpastor Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 I have been kind of looking for a shuttle tractor and I just acquired an Allis 712S to use for everyday yard stuff. As I was looking it over again I noticed on the bottom of the brake band for the shuttle it has worn to the point that there is no more material between the band and the drum. For the most part it is metal on metal. Has anyone replaced the material on these? I think the band is OK. I thought about using a thin leather belt. I will post pics later after work if that would help. thanks!
maxwood Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Hello , McMaster Carr sells brake lining material, in narrow widths and sells it by the foot . I wrapped the band around a quart paint can for a couple days to form it round, then glue it with E 6000 glue, that can be bought at any hardware store and a few brass rivets It still is holding Thanks Ken in Mi
Tacey Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 It's interesting that you would be looking for a shuttle. Many who post on this forum have stated that the shuttle type tractors should be avoided. Personally I like the three speed setup, which I have run for years on several tractors with excellent results. I've never operated a shuttle tractor so I have no experience with one. What may I ask led you to look for a shuttle?
Simpastor Posted May 23, 2014 Author Posted May 23, 2014 My reasonings are a sore knee and a nine year old that can't quite reach the clutch yet but can run the shifter, the throttle, and the shuttle handle. I have a couple of three speeds. I like them too.
babablacksheep Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I've had a 712S for over twenty years that has functioned reliably with only an occasional adjustment. I really prefer it to my hydro units when I'm in tight places and doing a lot of back and forth. It has the major advantage of backing up at the same speed it was going forward. No nasty surprises because you moved the hydro lever a hair too far.
dhoadley Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I'm glad to hear something positive about the shuttle. I got a A/C 414S project last fall and it's my only large frame. I don't know what I'll do with it once it's running but I'll worry about that later. Dave
oldsarge Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I agree with BBBS,got 2 great for snoblowing,Run it in till it gets stuck, pull back 'till it comes out,run it in again,Eazy peazy;)
Tacey Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I have been around this forum about 11 years, on and off. Posters have had problems getting shuttles to work for a variety of reasons. Many commented that they would avoid buying one. I have seen them for sale in my area and never considered getting one. Maybe I'll reconsider.
