I just bought a 917H and need to clean it up. Can I simply remove the old filter and replace with the new hydraulic filter, or will I lose all of the fluid when I remove it? - Thanks!

I would change the fluid as well. Who knows when the last time it was changed. If ever.

Thanks! You know, I think that I will... And the bevel gears as well... I found that the KT17 was replaced with an M18. It seems somewhat butchered with lots of cuts into the shields and loose wires everywhere. Is there anything that I should be watchful of? Today, I noticed that my hydraulic lift arm has an awful LOT of play. Is this a common problem that can be easily fixed? It seems that accessing it is a little challenging. I almost pulled the engine just to access it, then I decided to regroup and attack tomorrow with a fresh head.

I've been researching Hydraulic filters and come up with a few WIX numbers, and now I'm confused. Can anyone tell me the correct filter to use for my 917H? I come up with the following:

WIX: 51335 Short

WIX: 51084 Long

WIX: 51269

Also, I read somewhere that Lucus hydraulic fluid is a good alternative to the Allis Chalmers 821. Is this true? Or is there a better choice? I prefer to use a good product...

Depends on whether you have a remote filter or the one on the side of the pump. Remote you can use a 51084. Side of pump the 51335. Also last year I discovered the 51307 which is longer than the 51335 and same micron rating. So it has more capacity and less whine than the 51335.You can also get them at NAPA cheaper. Wix makes NAPA filters. Just drop the 5 off the number when you talk to the counter guy.I have used Type F and Dexron for years with no problems. Simplicity makes the Allis but they both state other types of fluid that can be used. Ariens & John Deere manual states using SAE 10w 30.

Some good information especially since I lost my reference chart on oil filters. Had to spend about 20 minutes at the auto parts store to find the short side mount filter. What surprised my was that the 51335 short filter was $7. The longer 51307 (which at the time I didn't know would work) was $20.

I thought that the Sundstrand remote filter was Wix 51086?

Does someone have the WIX/NAPA numbers for the Vickers hydro?

I did a search of simplettractors came up with nothing.

I paid $5.50 at NAPA for the 1307.

Thanks for the links Ray. I thought I remembered a something about a Vickers filter discussion but could not find it.

I must be doing something wrong, as I just tried the search again and I only get this thread and nothing more.

The only issue with the "long" filters (NAPA 1068 for example, which I use) is, if you run chains on the rear tires, and if they are a bit loose, the clearance can be problematic. Otherwise, I like the bigger filter, more cooling more fluid.

Thanks for all of the information RAY! I've been busy putting it to good use!!!

Brett, the 1307 is about a 1/2" shorter than the 1068. The chain issue is why I switched. After I removed the schrader valve from the valve stems and tighten the chains as much as possible then reinstall the valve. I had no problems with the chain hitting. I had a tire that liked to lose air over a few weeks and then the chain would rub a little. So I had tubes installed in a set of dedicated snow tires and just leave the chains on them now.

The 1307 filter says it is for Allis 312, 416 and others. Which I do not understand where it would have fit those tractors. Since they have Vickers hydros and I never seen a K series Kohler yet that has a oil filter. It must cross to the Ultima and Sunstar.
