717 Hi-Lo

I just acquired a Broadmoor 717. It's in excellent shape, always garaged. Wow. I also got the plow and mounting bracket with it, which have seen very little use. But the motor is seized. I'm planning to put a 2012 Briggs & Stratton 10.5hp on there. I'm hoping it will fit without modification. I would also like to purchase a snowblower, but I've read that it's very important to have the Hi Lo option for blowing snow. Mine does not have the hi lo option. What would it take to put the hi-lo option on there? Where can I find the parts? My tractor is already labeled for the option and has the cutout.

Thanks,

The hi-low is a bolt on accessory add on option. You take your tranny drive pulley off and replace it with the hi-low unit, which is itself a pulley that pops in and out of a set of gears to reduce the speed. Someone will probably come along with a picture. It has a engagement lever that will stick through the hole in your fender that will shift side to side.

Putting the h-low on is no problem, finding the hi low is a little more difficult. They seem to be easier to find though then a hi-low for the bigger tractors.

This one is NOS, and been on ebay forever...2 years? More? $150 is awful high for a smallframe hilo, but hey, depends how bad you want one.

I've blown snow with my small frames, and have never found myself wishing I had my HiLo mounted. It's still sitting in the box! ;) Single stage blowers like to be fed, and the width of your swath can control how hard you pull down on the engine. You're going to a lot of power vs OEM, and you won't have a problem. Most 3-4" snows I played in, I was running in 2nd gear this past winter on the original 8 horse in my B-208.

Don't forget Josh that he has the two speed transaxle.

I commonly blow snow in 2nd low. We're talking the 6" average snowfalls in my part of the woods.

I figure with a tractor with only two forward speeds, a Hi Lo should add better performance, even when mowing. Four speeds forward and two speeds reverse are nice.

On my Serf, reverse is just as fast as third gear. It's nice to put it in Lo when around trees, or other things that might break when I back into them.

That guy on Fleabay listed like four of the pulley kits at first. I'm surprised he sold most of them for his price.

Thanks for all the responses. I will probably pick up the Hi-Lo after I actually get this thing running. It's nice to see that it shouldn't be too difficult to install.

I haven't settled on an engine yet. Maybe I will post a new thread to look for recommendations on what to use for a repower.
