Jefferson428 Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 Hello, my shifter lever bracket broke that attaches to the trans shaft. Do I have to pull the complete trans out to fix and if so how big of a job is it? Thanks!
steve-wis Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I am not sure, but looking at the parts manual it looks like there should be a way to pull the shaft from the outside. There is a split bushing that goes around the shaft and an o-ring. It is possible that the split bushing is nested into the transmission case halves, in which case you would need to split the thing to get it out. I have never had to work on mine in that area so just not sure. I would clean it off good and see if there is a set screw or something, or a pin that could be pushed out to release it before pulling the tranny. Sorry I can't be more help, maybe someone else here has more experience with the tranny than I do. Good luck! Steve
Jefferson428 Posted June 1, 2014 Author Posted June 1, 2014 Thanks Steve, the shifter bracket is , was, welded and it looks like the weld broke and nothing behind it to allow shaft removal. I tried taking the sheet metal chassis apart and then realized that it's one piece and that I'd have to pull an axle to remove so I put it back together.......it's a 1984 and I'd hate to have to get something else. It's been a work horse for me for the last 20 years mowing about 4 acres a week. Only things that have been replaced are a few blade bearings, blades and a coil..... If anyone else can help id appreciate it very much.
rokon2813 Posted June 1, 2014 Posted June 1, 2014 I have never had one apart, but judging by this picture and the note about lube, I think it will pull out from the outside. The welded part would be too big to go through the hole to install from the inside.Though I'm not sure the function of roll pin #20. It may hold the shift rod in.Someone will be along sooner or later with a link to the repair manual I bet.A good guy with a welder might be able to stick it back together without taking it apart.
Jefferson428 Posted June 1, 2014 Author Posted June 1, 2014 Thanks, item #3 kinda look like valve spring keepers. I wonder if they hold the shaft in place but that would mean that the shaft would have to be pushed in to free the keepers. Thanks again for the info!
steve-wis Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 I think item 3 is a bushing with a ball-shaped bore that is cut in half. It goes over the ball on the shifter lever and then the lever and bushing halves slide into the case, but not sure what holds them there. The roll pin might be it. Again, this is what I think it is, I haven't had one apart. Steve
