huffy Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 I'm ordering some Simplicity Deep Orange (part #1685612SM) paint from Jack's to repaint one of my tractors. Is there a specific brand or type of hardener that I should use with it? It will probably say on the can, but I was hoping to go ahead and get some hardener before the paint gets here so I'm ready to go when it arrives.
RayS Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 I use TSC hardener in The Agco, Simplicity and John Deere paint on several restores that I have done and it works fine. It is for enamel and that is what the three above are. I would also not use paint thinner as a reducer as mentioned on the cans of paint (just dries slower). You can get MEK or xylene at about anywhere and the paint dries faster.
MikeES Posted June 3, 2014 Posted June 3, 2014 Careful with xylene with very warm temperatures it can dry too fast, and it can create orange peel with the 2nd coat...it will not 'melt' into the first coat.
RayS Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 MEK is the same price at Menards. I never had an issue with Xylene, but that doesn`t mean others haven`t. Lacquer thinner is excellent for cleaning the gun and cheaper than the two mentioned above. Some use lacquer thinner to reduce paint, but I have always been told it messes up enamel paint. Not sure and never tried it as a reducer for that reason.
