The float needle got bound up or stuck somehow so I remove the carb, inside it was absolutely spotless, no rust, no corrosion, no pitting, nothing, but the big plug that covers the updraft holes doesn't seem airtight, It seems to have some movement, should I seal or glue it?

Is the center dimpled a bit inward? If it isn't, you could try seating it by using a golf ball as a seating tool and give it a good hammer tap so it is dimpled inward and that generally seats it. Note you only get one try. ;) If it is then Seal All or an epoxy bead will do the trick,

Not even sure where I'd find a golf ball, I'll use a round rubber hammer, thanks. I got it back together, not to set it, AFTER I install ANOTHER plastic starter gear, any ideas why there wearing out so fast. Thanks, Mike

Have you checked the load on the engine?

PTO's on while starting?

Try turning the engine over by hand, if the resistance is very high that may be the issue.

The type of failure of the gear is also of value.

Is it breaking in half, fragmenting or smearing the gears are the gear teeth meshing correctly with the ring gear?

If only half of the teeth are being affected then the starter position is at the root.

Is there three blind mice smashed on the ring gear causing stresses.

A pebble jammed or lodged in the teeth of the ring gear?

The starter gear slinger, clean and in good shape.

My 4211 had the same problem. Turned out they had given me the wrong gear for my fly wheel

id="quote"> I missed adding that, but i did think of it. The folks who sell parts don't always know, what they are holding is the correct one. I bought a transmission line that had steel molded tube on it and was told this is it. I brought in my old one to show them it was a complete opposite. In this case he won't have the original and that was my thinking or he would have lined them up and seen the flaw in the design. there are several ways to look at the cause of bendix gear failure, there may be more.
