Dutch, You're right. I trusted the math in my head, and came out wrong. In that case the engine would be a 23 CI. I don't know which version it would be, though. The model 23 through the model 23D all had the rectangular, tin point box cover, as did the early 230000. I do know that all the model 23's had the model, type and code number on a plate riveted to the air deflector on the back of the cylinder. The late 230000's had the numbers stamped into the lower left of the blower housing. Was this true of all the 230000's, or just the later ones? I can't recall any 230000's with the number on a plate. As I look at my B&S part list on these engines, here are a few differences between these engines. The Briggs & Stratton 23,23A all had the tin points cover, model 23C had the points under the flywheel, model 23D had points alum cover on the side of the engine. Also different flwheels, coils, etc. That would make your engine a 9 hp.Looking at the gas tank ,I would say this engine was made in the 1950's I have a Simplicity two wheel tractor (VA)with style of gas cap on the fuel tank, this tractor is from 1954[A href='http://www.simplicityva.com']http://www.simplicityva.com[/a]

Using your measurements [3.00" bore and 3.25" stroke] the displacement would be 22.97 cubic inches [V=(Pi r2)H]. Using those measurements with your photo, the engine appears to be a 230000 series.

Hope this is okay, but I'm stuck. As some of you know I have a little crawler tractor that I've been restoring. The engine is an iron block Briggs and Stratton unit that is missing it's ID tag. I have more information at http://www.wheatfarm.com/crawler/index.html under the "Briggs and Stratton" engine link.[A href='http://www.wheatfarm.com']http://www.wheatfarm.com[/a]

Wow! Thanks for the input guys. Much appreciated. Hopefully I won't need much for the engine. The one concern I have is the way a previous owner wittled some of the spark plug wire insulation off to put a new end on. If it works as/is, I'll solder it and put a new boot on. Thanks again.[A href='http://www.wheatfarm.com']http://www.wheatfarm.com[/a]

That engine looks identical to the 19FB on my Jim Dandy Economy.[A href='http://home.earthlink.net/~rickanderson2/index.html'][img src='http://home.earthlink.net/~rickanderson2/_uimages/JimDandy.JPG'][/a]
